LAGOS, Nigeria -- A new report says Nigeria's Boko Haram Islamic insurgents have become the world's deadliest extremist group, edging out the Islamic State group to which it is affiliated.
The Global Terrorism Index says deaths attributed to Boko Haram increased by 317% in 2014 to 6,644 compared to 6,073 blamed on Islamic State. Boko Haram pledged allegiance to IS in March and calls itself that group's West Africa Province.

We Are Prosecuting 137 Biafran Agitators – IGP...

The Inspector General, Mr. Solomon Arase said on Wednesday that the Police has clamped down and is prosecuting no fewer than 137 lawless civilians agitating for the return of the defunct Biafra Republic.

He said, “What I can assure you is that we will not allow any group to disturb the peace of this country. We will clamp down on them, we will deal with them, we will prosecute them. Already, we have about 137 of them who are undergoing prosecution across the length and breadth of the South East and we will continue to do that.”

Woman killed in Nigeria state poll violence

ABUJA: A woman was killed on Saturday as voters went to the polls in tight security to elect a new governor in Nigeria’s southern state of Bayelsa, officials said.

Bayelsa is the home state of former president Goodluck Jonathan, where incumbent governor Seriake Dickson is running against former governor Timipre Sylva for another four-year term in office.

The woman was shot dead in Oporoma, a town at least 100 kilometres (60 miles) west of Port Harcourt, Nigeria’s oil hub, which is the capital of neighbouring Rivers state, in one of a series of shooting attacks.

Speaking to AFP, the governor’s spokesman Daniel Iwariso-Markson said a woman had been killed in Oporoma, indicating there had also been shooting attacks in Ekeremor, Nembe town and Brass......
